Arc
furnaces operated by direct current use a
transformer / rectifier combination as energy
source. The rectifier will be a thyristor type,
defining the transformer parameters. The rectifier
system is mostly a 12-pulse bridge, requiring two
secondary and primary systems in the transformer.
The regular transformer arrangement is a
double-decker layout, with the possibility of an
intermediate yoke. The fine regulation of the
furnace DC voltage is done by the rectifier itself.
The coarse regulation is mostly done by applying a
tap changer in the HV winding. This is normally done
using a no-load tap changer (NLTC) Important
operational conditions to take into account are
primarily related to actual current harmonics and
the cyclic thermal and mechanical stresses in
operation. DC furnace transformers also need
adequate voltage protection due to operational
generated over voltages.
